Club History
In 1996 six local amateur athletes/runners formed
the Sturdy Runaways running club. In 1997, the Sturdys Runaways affiliated with the New
England Association of USA Track & Field as club # 85. In 1998, Manuel S. Desierto became
the first club member recognized by USATF-NE as a recipient of the "Ironrunner" award. Manny currently resides
in California.
At the 2000 Annual Meeting, the membership voted
to move the club to the public sector. The club was renamed the Runaways Running Club. The club USATF designation
remained the same; the club census has increased to 10 long time and 20 current members in Attleboro,
North Attleboro, Rehoboth, Norton, Mansfield, Pawtucket,
and Cumberland.
In 2002 the club organized in Massachusetts as
the Runaways Running Club, Inc. and applied for federal tax exempt status. 2006 marks
the start of our tenth anniversary, our "Runners Hospitality Booth", and our 5th Runaways Runaround
